#Top Tip Takeaways
Each week we have our amazing guests leave us with some top tips to take away. I will then give further information on each of the takeaways so that you can look into them further in your own time. Use #toptiptakeaways to let us know if there are other takeaways you would like to know about.
1. Educators as Change Agents
2. What is Agency? Why is it topic of conversation?
3. Teacher talk vs Student talk
4. Jigsaw Technique & Reciprocal Teaching
5. Socialisation & Conditioning

1. Educators as Change Agents
What does it mean to be an activator vs a facilitator? During this part of the session it was great to discuss what that means and why. With the change in script it can be easy to think that this means that we take the back seat to allow learners to do what they want. However it is very important that we intentional plan for the session and setup activities that provoke and ignite learning as well as scaffolding the sessions through our questioning.

2. What is Agency? Why is it topic of conversation?
Student agency refers to learning through activities that are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests, and often self-initiated with appropriate guidance from teachers. This links to supporting learners to take control of their learning. At Stonefields School we have been working as a team to create a shared language for Agency as well as prompts to support our learners with visuals I have created with a team including:

3. Teacher talk vs Student talk
'Teachers need to learn to Shut up' might sound a bit harsh but true. Recording your lessons is a great way I have used to reflect and think about how I use questioning and understand how I use my voice in the lessons. What do the students hear? Recording my lesson was very daunting and confronting to begin with but now I see it is as a great powerful tool to be reflective. So instead of judging myself I just use it as a way to notice what my next steps are. Is this something you could do?

4. Jigsaw Technique & Reciprocal Teaching
These are methods that John Hattie talks about in the session that promote agency and intentional teaching. I have also attached some of the prompts I have created as part of my reciprocal Teaching approach in reading so you can make a copy to use with your learners. I am currently working on videos of me using them in my teaching so I will add these when they are finished. Keep checking in!!

5. Socialisation and Conditioning
Instead of promoting the right answer we need our learners to continue their journey of curiosity and creativity to ask questions and wonder. This has been a big part of the google innovator programme. Instead of learners needing answers they need to be able to ask questions and have an open growth mindset. How do you foster this?
